What causes dark skin?

The most common forms of dull skin are caused by sun damage, especially by ultraviolet rays. Dark skin can also be caused by hormonal changes caused by congenital or hormonal disorders (as occurs in Addison's disease) or a combination of factors such as sunlight or skin reactions (due to allergies to a chemical or plant).

  1. Genetic causes of dull skin

Dark skin may be caused by a number of congenital or genetic disorders, including:

  • Acanthosis nigricans

  • incontinenta pigmenti

  • Neurofibromatosis (caffeolite macules that contain light brown or white patches of skin)

  • Xeroderma pigmentosum (a genetic disorder in DNA repair)

  1. Hormonal causes of dull skin

Darkening of the skin is also seen due to hormonal changes and in the following diseases:

  • Addison's disease (decreased production of hormones secreted by the adrenal glands)

  • Cushing's disease (excess doses of corticosteroids)

  • Hyperthyroidism (hyperthyroidism)

  • Pregnancy

  • Oral contraceptive pills

  1. Environmental causes of dull skin

Dark skin can be caused by exposure to environmental factors. In this case, factors such as the following are effective in creating blur:

  • Sunlight

  • Toxic substances (such as arsenic)

  1. Other causes of dull skin

Other causes of dark skin include:

  • Diabetic dermatopathy (light brown, scaly spots caused by vascular changes caused by diabetes)

  • Freckles

  • Hemochromatosis

  • Tinea versicolor (fungal infection of the skin due to Malassezia furfur)
