How to reduce swelling after rhinoplasty?

First of all, I must say that the swelling after rhinoplasty increases from the third day and reaches its peak on the fifth day, but then gradually decreases. The following helps reduce inflammation:

  • Use an ice pack in the first twenty-four hours under the eyes and around the nose and even on the nose

  • Two pillows under the patient's head

  • Avoid physical activity

  • Avoid sunlight, heat, computer light and energy-saving lamps because ultraviolet rays are highly inflammatory.

  • Accurate taping also helps to reduce swelling a lot and taping once or twice a week, preferably ...

Severe swelling is in the first three weeks, then the swelling decreases, but mild swelling is seen up to six months after rhinoplasty.

After rhinoplasty in order to have the best results and no problems, patients should follow the post-rhinoplasty recommendations provided by rhinoplasty surgeons and follow them as much as possible. Some of these recommendations are:

  • Avoid laughing and talking too much in the first weeks.

  • Avoid eating foods that require a lot of chewing, such as apples, carrots, steaks, etc. for 24 hours, and then use mixed and softened foods and include more juices and soups in your meals.

  • Avoid being in crowded environments such as subways and buses, where you are more likely to encounter people, until your nose is formed.

  • In the first days when you want to wake up, get help from other people because you may feel dizzy.

  • When sleeping, put a few pillows under your head so that your head is above your feet and less swelling is created in your head.

  • Use a soft toothbrush and try to wear buttoned clothes that do not touch your nose when wearing.

  • Sneeze with your mouth open.

  • In the first weeks, due to the accumulation of nasal secretions and its drying, you may find it difficult to breathe. To solve this problem, you can use saline solution several times a day using a 20 cc syringe while standing in the bathroom. Clean your nose. Be careful not to get nasal patches wet while rinsing. You can also use a wet cotton swab to clean the underside of your nose.

  • Avoid blowing your nose and draining nasal secretions with pressure.

  • Do not use sunglasses or prescription glasses for 3 months, if necessary, you can use lenses.
